Marianist Sharing Fund in Action
ASSISTANCE GIVES OPPORTUNITES TO AT-RISK CHILDREN
The
Marianist Sharing Fund is making David Winter’s freshman year at
St. Mary’s High School in St. Louis a little easier by providing
assistance with books, school clothes, and other items necessary for
high school. David, a graduate of Loyola Academy in St. Louis, a Nativity
model middle school that offers a nurturing environment for at-risk students,
received Marianist Sharing Fund assistance through a grant awarded to
Loyola to help at-risk youth attend high school. David was able to attend
Loyola and eventually St. Mary’s through a scholarship he received
from the Dan Devereaux Memorial Trust, a scholarship created by Mike
Devereaux to honor his late brother Dan, a committed mentor to minority
and at-risk youths, who died in 2000. The goal of the Devereaux Trust
is to provide at-risk children in the metro St. Louis area with opportunities
for a good education and help them enter post-secondary education or
secure above minimum wage employment. The Devereaux Trust, plus a lot
of out of pocket assistance from Mike, helped with David’s tuition
for St. Mary’s. “In addition to tuition though,” said
Bev Rombach, director of development at Loyola, “in high school
you have costs for books, clothes, food, retreats and other items that
these families are not prepared for.” Rombach saw David’s
situation as a perfect fit for a portion of the grant money Loyola received
from the Marianist Sharing Fund. “The help has given David the
ability to thrive, just as you would clearly expect him to, if given
the opportunity,” said Mike Devereaux. According to David, who
is enjoying his time at St. Mary’s, he now has a chance to get
into a good college and go into engineering one day. Find
